Biography
Blake Schmidt was born in 1980 and raised in northeastern New Jersey, 11 miles as the crow flies from Yankee stadium. GO YANKEES! At age eleven, I went skiing for the first time and decided that day that I should pursue a college with access to lots of snowfall and vertical drop. Eleven years later, I earned a B.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a “major” in skiing and “minor” in Environmental, Population and Organismic biology. My undergraduate work was highlighted by a semester of
study at the then Columbia University's Biosphere 2 Center in Oracle, Arizona. I later continued in Boulder and earned a M.A. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology studying the effects of urban sprawl on Swainson's hawk nest-site selection. Although I always thought college was preparing me for a career as a researcher, being "forced" to teach for a tuition waiver as a graduate student led me to change my mind. Teaching quickly became my passion over working endless hours with GIS and statistics. Teaching has been the most enjoyable and rewarding work I have ever pursued. While at the University of Colorado, I taught labs in Ecology, Plant Physiology, Cellular Physiology, and General Biology. I even spent one summer co-authoring a new Ecology lab manual for the university. After abusing my knees skiing moguls for 8 years, it was time to move on. I moved from landlocked Colorado to the Gulf Coast of southwest Florida where I am
a teacher at Lemon Bay High School and an adjunct professor at Edison State College. This year I’m teaching AP Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, and Dual Enrollment Environmental Biology. When I’m not teaching, I like to take advantage of the great fishing the area offers.
